Amway North America – a stunning new statistic!

We’re still awaiting Amway’s official sales data from 2010 but already some info has leaked out in various press interviews and elsewere. In the recent USA Today article on Amway, Amway North American managing director Steve Lieberman was quoted as saying North American sales were up about 5% – the most significant growth in that market for many years. Over on Amway Talk it was reported that Sandy Spielmaker, Vice-President of Sales, announced at a conference that global sales were over $9 billion – putting global growth at over 6%, excellent in the current economic climate!

Tonight though I came across a figure that is in my opinion far, far, far more impressive. A few years ago when Team and Quixtar were busy suing each other, some internal Quixtar statistics (Amway North America was then operating as Quixtar) revealed that the overall renewal rate for North American IBOs was 56.9% – ie well over half of all IBOs renewed every year. This compared favourably with DSA (Direct Selling Association) statistics of an industry average of 56%.

What was not so good was the Quixtar statistic that only 30.5% of first year IBOs renewed. Seven out of ten IBOs that were sponsored did not renew. That figure isn’t at all surprising when taken with the statistic that half of them never even ordered a product after joining! Clearly there was a lot of energy going in to sponsoring people that was not actually leading to any results, apart from perhaps a bunch of people who felt overly pressured to join something they didn’t really want to join in the first place, or whom were never properly trained and helped to get their business started.

I’ve always thought that was a terrible inefficiency in this business model, and a great place where improvements could be made.

Well, tonight I was surfing around and I discovered a press release from Bersin & Associates, a research firm focused on enterprise learning and talent management and acquistion. A few days ago they announced the 2011 Learning Leaders Winners, recognizing organizations that “drove significant business improvement with innovative and effective approaches to employee learning and talent management”.

Amway was one of the winners, for –

… its blended sales training program designed to improve early success of newly hired independent business owners. The program resulted in a 76% retention rate in its first year – 46% higher than previous rates.

A 76% first year retention rate! That’s a better than 150% improvement and an absolutely stunning statistic.

Well done Amway! This bodes extremely well for the future, and I look forward to seeing the lessons learned implemented in other markets!

Amway ranked one of China’s top consumer brands

Amway has been listed as one of China’s top consumer brands in the inaugural CLSA China Brands index. Of all brands, Amway was ranked 72nd, outranking companies such as Nestle (75), Apple (77), Panasonic (83), Toshiba (84), and Whirlpool (96).

Amway was listed within the skincare category, where it ranked 3rd after mass market brands OLay and L’Oreal.

This recognition follows only a short time after Amway was ranked one of Korea’s favourite foreign companies.

Amway – one of Korea’s favourite foreign companies

Amway_KoreaAccording to a survey by the Korean Foreign Company Association (KOFA), Amway was the third favourite foreign company in Korea, beaten only by McDonalds and Carrefour and outranking companies like Citibank, IBM, Renault, and Sony.

That’s a challenge for Amway business owners in the rest of the world! You’ve got much the same products and much the same business plan as Amway Koreacan you help make Amway one of the public’s favourite companies in your country?

Artistry hits the airwaves

Over on the Artistry focussed All Dolled Up Opportunity Zone Blog, regular blogger Jessica Ellis has handed the reins for the day to Lindsay Martin from Amway Global Media Relations. Lindsay gives a great rundown on one of Amway Globals recent initiatives to increase media and public awareness of the Artistry skin care and cosmetics brand. A few weeks ago they flew a number of “opinion leaders” in the cosmetics and beauty field to Ada, Michigan to check out the science and manufacturing behind Artistry products. One local show, Take 5 from Grand Rapids WZZM Channel 13 has already aired a segment on the tour and posted it online.

The show gives a brief but enlightening insight into what a leader Artistry is in the field of skincare. Chuck Lia on his Speaking of Amway blog has posted the first of his Ten Points That Set Amway Apart series and talks about Amway’s unrivalled history in the direct selling field. I have little doubt that one of his future points will be the amazing R&D team that Amway has backing up the products we IBOs market. It’s an award winning story that the world, and Amway business owners, need to hear. Just recently, Amway’s Artristry Creme LuXury product won an award for packaging design and several of Nutrilite’s scientists won a prestigious international research award. To the best of my knowledge no other direct selling firm even comes close to Amway in Research & Development, and few, if any, health & beauty companies either.

Amway Australia website ranked #2

Amway Australia’s website, called a2k.com.au until recently, has again been announced as one of Australia’s most popular websites by Hitwise, an independent site traffic monitoring company. From the announcement email –

Congratulations! Hitwise is pleased to announce that www.a2k.com.au is a Hitwise Top 1 Award winner for the quarter ending ending July – September 27.

During this period, www.a2k.com.au ranked No. 2 by visits among all Australian websites in the Hitwise Shopping and Classifieds – Wholesale and Relationship Sales industry.

The Hitwise Top 1 Award recognises websites from over 16 industries that are leaders in their industry and brings with it the benefit of using the Hitwise Top 1 Award shield (pictured right).

a2k has won these awards consistently since it was launched in April 2. Indeed if I recall correctly it did so well that a number of the “traditional” retailers pushed Hitwise to create the separate “Wholesale and Relationship Sales” category so that Amway’s performance didn’t continue to outshine them. Obviously the internet landscape has changed somewhat since then, but a2k has continued to perform. I’ve little doubt the new rebranded www.amway.com.au will continue to be just as successful.
